{"id":4762,"date":"2017-03-13T16:34:02","date_gmt":"2017-03-13T16:34:02","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.visionpubl.com\/en\/?p=4762"},"modified":"2017-03-13T16:34:02","modified_gmt":"2017-03-13T16:34:02","slug":"temple-of-serapis","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.visionpubl.com\/en\/cities\/pergamon\/temple-of-serapis\/","title":{"rendered":"Temple of Serapis"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The <strong>Temple of Serapis<\/strong> or <strong>Kizil Avlu<\/strong> (<strong>Red Hall<\/strong>, thus called because of the color of the bricks) is the most impressive building of the city, and covers an area of <strong>260 x 100 meters<\/strong>.<br \/>\nIt is an <strong>Eastern-Roman temple<\/strong>, with features of extreme originality, first of all because of its position: its huge <strong>rectangular courtyard<\/strong> is set along the course of the <strong>River Selinus<\/strong>, which crosses it diagonally, underground, through two large vaulted channels.<br \/>\nIts plan is also unusual: the temple itself consists of a <strong>central hall<\/strong> on a <strong>rectangular plan<\/strong>, closed at the back by a sort of apse.<\/p>\n<p><img src=\"http:\/\/www.visionpubl.com\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/3\/2017\/03\/8692992896_bcd31ca17b_b.jpg\" \/><\/p>\n<p>\u00a9 Photo credits by <a class=\"linkHighlight\" href=\"https:\/\/www.flickr.com\/photos\/simonjenkins\/\" target=\"_new\">simonjenkins&#8217; photos<\/a> under CC-BY-SA-2.0<\/p>\n<p>The building is flanked by <strong>two symmetrical side constructions<\/strong> with identical plans, made up of a porticoed courtyard with <strong>two basins and a rotunda<\/strong> closed between <strong>two rectangular rooms<\/strong>.<br \/>\nAnother surprising element for <strong>Asia Minor<\/strong> is the material employed: <strong>red brick<\/strong>.
