{"id":4728,"date":"2017-03-13T16:22:24","date_gmt":"2017-03-13T16:22:24","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.visionpubl.com\/en\/?p=4728"},"modified":"2017-03-13T16:22:24","modified_gmt":"2017-03-13T16:22:24","slug":"sanctuary-of-demeter","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.visionpubl.com\/en\/cities\/pergamon\/sanctuary-of-demeter\/","title":{"rendered":"Sanctuary of Demeter"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The <strong>Sanctuary of Demeter<\/strong> occupies a vast <strong>rectangular terrace (100 x 50 meters)<\/strong>, and is a construction dating from the <strong>Hellenistic Age<\/strong>, with reworkings during <strong>the Roman Age<\/strong>.<br \/>\n<strong>The entrance is on the southeast side<\/strong>, near a <strong>fountain and a sacrificial pit<\/strong>, used to collect the blood of the victims.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Surrounded by porticoes<\/strong> on three sides, <strong>the temenos<\/strong> has, on the side opposite the entrance, the <strong>temple dedicated to the goddess<\/strong>, originally in antis, of the <strong>Ionic order<\/strong> and later transformed into a <strong>Corinthian prostyle<\/strong>, distyle temple for <strong>Demeter<\/strong>, and <strong>Kore<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>This change, made by <strong>Claudius Silanus Aesimus<\/strong>, a member of a large family of <strong>Palmyrene notable<\/strong>s under <strong>Antoninus Pius<\/strong>, corresponds to a new, renewed interest, characteristic of the age, in the mystery cults that promised resurrection after death.<br \/>\nIn front of the temple stand the <strong>large main altar<\/strong> and four smaller altars.<br \/>\nBut the main interest and <strong>particularity of this sanctuary<\/strong> lies in the presence, to the northeast, of a <strong>theatron of ten tiers<\/strong> created to seat around <strong>800 persons<\/strong>, enabling them <strong>to watch the ceremonies<\/strong> from a position separate from the crowd. This is the only religious building of such a large size in this quarter.<br \/>\n<strong>The other three temples<\/strong> \u2013 of <strong>Hera<\/strong> <strong>Bas\u00edleia<\/strong>, <strong>Asklepios<\/strong> (both from the Attalid period), and <strong>Hermes and Heracles<\/strong>, the gods of the gymnasium \u2013 date from the <strong>Roman Age<\/strong> and were open to the imperial cult, and are much smaller.<br \/>\nThe second architectural nucleus of the intermediate city consists of an impressive <strong>gymnasium<\/strong> occupying three successive terraces.
