{"id":4615,"date":"2017-02-16T10:33:04","date_gmt":"2017-02-16T10:33:04","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.visionpubl.com\/en\/?p=4615"},"modified":"2017-02-16T10:33:04","modified_gmt":"2017-02-16T10:33:04","slug":"throne-room-palace-knossos","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.visionpubl.com\/en\/cities\/throne-room-palace-knossos\/","title":{"rendered":"The Throne Room of Palace of Knossos"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>An imposing <strong>Staircase<\/strong> flanked by porticoes ascended from <strong>the South Propylaeum<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p><strong>A rectangular building<\/strong> to the right of the staircase is thought to have been a <strong>Greek Temple of Rhea<\/strong>, which we know from <strong>Diodorus<\/strong> to have existed at Knossos. The same Staircase leads to the <strong>Tricolumnar Shrine<\/strong>, which is just as it is depicted in the <strong>frescoes<\/strong>. It was decorated with a fresco of a sacred marriage.<\/p>\n<p>Behind the shrine and exactly over the <strong>West Magazines<\/strong> is <strong>the Great Hall<\/strong> used for large gatherings, and to the north of it the Sanctuary Hall, where the famous fresco of <strong>the &#8220;Parisienne&#8221;<\/strong> was found. A light-well above the <strong>Throne Room<\/strong> comes out on a ter\u00acrace, where copies of the frescoes are displayed. A staircase at the north end of the ter\u00acrace leads to the groundfloor.<\/p>\n<p>On the groundfloor are the <strong>Ante-room<\/strong> and <strong>Throne Room<\/strong>. The Ante-room is entered through a set of four piers-and-doors. On the north side of the Throne Room is the gypsum throne with a bench on either side, and behind the throne a pair of griffins, its guardians. The sacred character of the room is evident from the <strong>&#8220;lustral basin&#8221;<\/strong> opposite the throne.<\/p>\n<p><img src=\"http:\/\/www.visionpubl.com\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/3\/2017\/02\/2687325824_2ff6b7e456_b.jpg\" \/><\/p>\n<p>\u00a9 Photo credits by <a class=\"linkHighlight\" href=\"https:\/\/www.flickr.com\/photos\/tylerbell\/\" target=\"_new\">Tyler Bell<\/a> under CC-BY-2.0<\/p>\n<p>The <strong>squat alaba\u00acstron-type of vase<\/strong>s found on the floor show that a ceremony to propitiate the deity was in progress at the moment of the destruction.<\/p>\n<p>There is a <strong>Stepped Porch<\/strong> south of the Throne Room with <strong>12 steps and two columns<\/strong> in line on the steps to sup\u00acport the roof. South of and lower than the Stepped Porch, <strong>Cist-shaped Crypts<\/strong> lined with lead were found, which contained the <strong>fa\u00efence snake goddesses<\/strong>. These were the <strong>Temple Repositories<\/strong>. Directly south of the Stepped Porch the <strong>Tripartite Shrine<\/strong> fronts onto the Great Court. This type of shrine is well-known from the miniature frescoes. It is shallow in depth.<\/p>\n<p>A fine large pithos is preserved behind its west wall. <strong>South of the Tripartite Shrine<\/strong> steps lead down to a paved area which was the <strong>Ante-room of the Pillar Crypt<\/strong>, a hypostyle chamber where sacrifices took place.<\/p>\n<p>The pillars, with <strong>double-axes carved<\/strong> on them, have the character of <strong>&#8220;baetyls&#8221;<\/strong>, sacred stones that were abstract re\u00acpresentations of the deity.
