{"id":4584,"date":"2017-02-13T12:44:09","date_gmt":"2017-02-13T12:44:09","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.visionpubl.com\/en\/?p=4584"},"modified":"2017-02-13T12:44:09","modified_gmt":"2017-02-13T12:44:09","slug":"the-theatre-of-delphi","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.visionpubl.com\/en\/cities\/delphi\/the-theatre-of-delphi\/","title":{"rendered":"The Theatre of Delphi"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong>The Theatre<\/strong>, <strong>designed to stage lyrical and dramatic productions<\/strong>, was cut out of the hillside overlooking the temple of Apollo <strong>during the sixth century BC<\/strong>, probably to replace an earlier wooden theatre.<br \/>\n<strong>It was<\/strong> <strong>restored in 159 BC by Eumenes II, king of Pergamon<\/strong>, and again during the Roman period. It was accessed through the eastern door of the temenos of the sanctuary.<\/p>\n<p><img src=\"http:\/\/www.visionpubl.com\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/3\/2017\/02\/28437209185_3ffe4516f0_b.jpg\" \/>\u00a9 Photo credits by <a class=\"linkHighlight\" href=\"https:\/\/www.flickr.com\/photos\/alun\" target=\"_new\">Alun Salt<\/a> under CC-BY-2.0<\/p>\n<p>The terraces were able to accommodate up to <strong>5000 spectators<\/strong> on occasion of the <strong>Pythian Games<\/strong>.<br \/>\nThe <strong>orchestra<\/strong>, with a paved floor featuring a drainage channel, and the cavea are particularly well preserved.\u00a0The <strong>cavea<\/strong> <strong>has thirty five tiers of seats<\/strong> divided horizontally into two orders, the lower one with seven sectors and the upper one with six.
