{"id":4556,"date":"2017-02-13T08:27:05","date_gmt":"2017-02-13T08:27:05","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.visionpubl.com\/en\/?p=4556"},"modified":"2017-02-13T08:30:04","modified_gmt":"2017-02-13T08:30:04","slug":"myth-of-delphi","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.visionpubl.com\/en\/cities\/delphi\/myth-of-delphi\/","title":{"rendered":"The Myth of Delphi"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The ancient Greeks considered<strong> Delphi <\/strong>the centre of the world.<\/p>\n<p>According to mythological tradition, <strong>Zeus <\/strong>released four eagles from the four corners of the Earth, which was believed to be flat, and they met at<strong> Delphi, <\/strong>which was henceforth known as the navel of the world, or omphalos.<\/p>\n<p>From the time in which the gods emerged from Chaos<strong>, Delphi was ruled by Gaea, the Earth goddess and the first prophetess.<\/strong> Her territory comprised a rocky cave, whose vapours had prophetic properties, and a sacred spring, which was guarded by her offspring, the <strong>serpent Python<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p><img src=\"http:\/\/www.visionpubl.com\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/3\/2017\/02\/9255892344_d3ed4b7cf2_b.jpg\" \/><\/p>\n<p>\u00a9 Photo credits by <a class=\"linkHighlight\" href=\"https:\/\/www.flickr.com\/photos\/47309201@N02\/\" target=\"_new\">Ronny Siegel<\/a> under CC-BY-2.0<\/p>\n<p><strong>The foundation myth<\/strong> of the shrine is told in the <strong>Homeric Hymn to Apollo<\/strong>, which recounts that Apollo, after wandering far and wide in search of a site for his own oracle, reached the slopes of <strong>Mount Parnassus<\/strong>, where he found the spring guarded by Python.<\/p>\n<p>Here he slew the monster with an arrow and left it to decompose on the ground, hence the serpent\u2019s name (from the Greek verb pythestai, meaning \u201cto rot\u201d).<\/p>\n<p>This feat earned Apollo the epithet of \u201c<strong>Pythian<\/strong>\u201d. According to the myth, Apollo inherited both the protection and the powers of the mysterious and primeval force of nature that issued from the cave, delegating the interpretation and communication of his will to the oracles of a priestess, known as the Pythia.<\/p>\n<p>Ancient sources reveal that the <strong>Pythia<\/strong> was originally a young woman from Delphi.
