{"id":4352,"date":"2016-10-28T16:56:23","date_gmt":"2016-10-28T16:56:23","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.visionpubl.com\/en\/?p=4352"},"modified":"2016-10-28T17:08:47","modified_gmt":"2016-10-28T17:08:47","slug":"palatine","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.visionpubl.com\/en\/cities\/palatine\/","title":{"rendered":"Palatine"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>For the Romans, the <strong>Palatine<\/strong> had always represented <strong>the city&#8217;s sacred birthplace<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>All ancient authors agree with the archaeological evidence that the hill, isolated from the others and in a position which <strong>dominated both the Tiber<\/strong>, right by the <strong>Tiber Island<\/strong>, and also the <strong>Forum Boarium marke<\/strong>t, was the site of the <strong>legendary &#8216;founding&#8217; of Rome<\/strong> and the &#8216;square furrow&#8217; ploughed by <strong>Romulus on 21 April of the year 754\/3 BC.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Legend apart, the hill has disclosed the remains of early bronze-age huts, providing incontrovertible evidence of the presence of an inhabited area in the very place to which ancient tradition ascribed the <strong>&#8216;<em>casa Romuli<\/em>&#8216;<\/strong>, ie the hut of the <strong>legendary founder<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>This was certainly one and probably also <strong>the most important of the villages<\/strong> from which the city of <strong>Rome<\/strong> was to evolve over the course of time.<\/p>\n<p><img src=\"http:\/\/www.visionpubl.com\/it\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2016\/10\/3059226091_e20a93df5d_b.jpg\" \/><br \/>\nPhoto credits by <a href=\" https:\/\/www.flickr.com\/photos\/32733356@N06\/\" target=\"new\">Eric<\/a> under CC-BY license.<\/p>\n<p><strong>\u00a0In 44 BC <a href=\"http:\/\/www.visionpubl.com\/it\/citta\/roma\/personaggi-antica-roma\/\">Augustus<\/a><\/strong> too decided to transfer his home there. From then on almost all the emperors went to live on the <strong>Palatine<\/strong>, which was gradually transformed into a single, <strong>sumptuous royal residence<\/strong>, the archetypal &#8216;palace&#8217;, a term which derives from the name of the hill, <strong>the <em>Palatium<\/em><\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>The first true imperial palace was the work of <strong>Tiberius, successor of Augustus<\/strong>.
