{"id":4345,"date":"2016-10-28T15:17:57","date_gmt":"2016-10-28T15:17:57","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.visionpubl.com\/en\/?p=4345"},"modified":"2016-10-28T17:13:55","modified_gmt":"2016-10-28T17:13:55","slug":"theatre-marcellus","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.visionpubl.com\/en\/cities\/theatre-marcellus\/","title":{"rendered":"Theatre of Marcellus"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong>The Theater of Marcellus<\/strong>, which occupies a site between <strong>the Capitol and the Tiber<\/strong>, is the only one that can still be seen today. <strong>It was begun by Caesar<\/strong> and <strong>completed by Augustus in 11 BC<\/strong>, when he dedicated it to the memory of his nephew and heir <strong>Marcellus<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>The theater had a <strong>diameter of 130 meters<\/strong>, rose to a <strong>height of 30m<\/strong>, and <strong>could seat about 15,000 spectators<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p><strong>In the Middle Ages<\/strong> it was used as a fortress by <strong>the noble Roman families<\/strong>, and in the <strong>16<sup>th<\/sup> Century<\/strong> it was transformed into a <strong>palace for the Caetani<\/strong> by the <strong>architect Baldassare Peruzzi<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>The choice of this site for the theater had been determined by that of the adjoining <strong>Temple of Apollo<\/strong>, where, already in <strong>Republican times<\/strong>, the <strong>special games celebrated<\/strong> in honour of the god included <strong>theatrical spectacles<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p><strong>The original temple was founded in 431 BC<\/strong>, when the <strong>cult of Apollo <em>Medicus <\/em><\/strong>(Apollo the healer) was introduced to <strong>Rome<\/strong> for the first time as the result of a vow made during a grave outbreak of pestilence.<\/p>\n<p><img src=\"http:\/\/www.visionpubl.com\/it\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2016\/10\/4910327656_f2eb803cd1_o.jpg\" \/><br \/>\nPhoto credits by <a href=\" https:\/\/www.flickr.com\/photos\/bio84\/\" target=\"new\">Fabio<\/a> under CC-BY-SA license.<\/p>\n<p>What can be seen today, however, goes back to a <strong>radical reconstruction undertaken by the Consul Gaius Sosius in 36 BC<\/strong>.
