The\u00a0Roman Colosseum<\/strong>, a.k.a. “Amphitheatrum Flavium” (Flavian Amphitheatre), is one of the major\u00a0tourist attractions in\u00a0Rome and is the world’s<\/strong>\u00a0largest amphiteater ever built<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

Its construction began under the emperor Vespasian<\/a>\u00a0in 72 d.C. and was completed under\u00a0Titus<\/a>\u00a0in\u00a080 d.C.. The Colosseum was used mainly for\u00a0gladiatorial contests<\/strong>, animal\u00a0hunts, executions,re-enactments of famous battles and other kinds of spectacles.<\/p>\n

The Colosseum could hold up to\u00a075.000 spectators<\/strong>. Each sector was reserved to a specific class of citizens, based on their importance. However, the\u00a0entrance was free for anybody.<\/p>\n\t\t

Spectators\u00a0were shielded from the sun <\/strong>thanks to a huge\u00a0velarium, <\/strong><\/em>which consisted of a canvas-covered, net-like structure made of ropes, with a hole in the center.\u00a0<\/strong><\/em>During the spectacles, a metallic net was disposed around the arena, to prevent\u00a0animals from getting out.<\/p>\n

The arena\u00a0comprised a wooden floor covered by sand, covering a large underground structure called the\u00a0hypogeum<\/i>. \u00a0Men and animals were lifted from underground to the surface thanks to a complex system of elevators and pulleys.<\/p>\n

The spectacles at Colosseum weren’t very frequent, but the could last several days.\u00a0In 107 d.C, Trajan<\/a> is\u00a0<\/strong>said to have celebrated his victories in Dacia<\/a> <\/strong>in 107 d.C with contests involving 11,000 animals and 10,000 gladiators <\/strong>over the course of 123 days<\/strong>.<\/p>\n
